How To: Survive A Family Wedding (if you are single)

Aug 11th

I hate weddings. It doesn’t matter whose it is…I just hate them. I’ve never been a fan of publicly announcing to the world my love for someone, let alone to that person. So the idea of weddings, not only make me wake up in the middle of the night with violent shakes, but you could say it starts putting a timer of sorts on things.

Well, the reason I bring this up, my sister (who is 22) and brother (27), both got engaged this summer within weeks of each other. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m always for a family party. But I can’t help feel like I’m losing both of them. And I’m also not looking forward to the where is your date question I will certainly hear through out the night.

When weddings come around you can’t help but want to rush into a relationship so 1)you don’t have to dance with your awkward uncle, and 2) you can avoid the “oh, have you met____)”/ the awkward singles table.

So I have five months to find a nice guy and convince him to be my date/actually start some kind of committed relationship with him. Which as of lately seems to be more of a feat than I thought.

Have you ever noticed the second you start searching for a date, the harder they are to find? It’s like there is some magnetic force field repelling people from you.

Or at least that’s what I’ve found.

It’s not like I’m normally a “relationship girl” (obviously), it’s just that weddings bring it out in me. Like a survival of the fittest instinct, where single people get knocked off first. So as you can see I’ve been a little worried, and have been filling my free time with a lot of coffee dates. Which have led to a lot of awkward conversations, and even a few kisses. But nothing commitment worthy thus far.

Who knows, maybe there will be some hot friend of a friend at the first wedding so I can at least have someone for the second.

So here’s your how to of the week:

Step 1: If you’re heading to the free bar, why not stop to chat with the handsome groomsman? Even though it’s a free bar, it still feels good to have someone else order it.

Step 2: If you feel uncomfortable stick close to your family. Sometimes weddings can be overwhelming when you don’t know anyone, so what better way to enjoy your time with the people who know you best.

Step 3: Dance and enjoy yourself. No matter your relationship status your family will always be there for you and love you. So why not just eat a little bit of cake, wish a little love and get down on the dance floor.

About the Author,

Over the past four years I've been collecting a few million how not to date stories, mostly from the hundreds of blind first dates I've gone on. My friends have even dubbed me the MVP of dating, and after you strike out as many times as I have you learn a thing or two (i.e. Never get extra onions on your burger during a first date if you want a romantic kiss.)
