Surviving…the Idea that You’re Forever Alone

This is it. Today is big. Today is the day that I address all of my friends who think that they will be hashtag-forever-alone (also known as #foreveralone). I know it can seem daunting sometimes when you’re in a college full of strangers, one of which you’re convinced is supposed to be your life partner. Then you feel like crap about yourself, and think that you’re a terrible boyfriend / girlfriend, and it all goes downhill from there. And that’s a bad feeling. So here are my three steps to stopping the sinking feeling that you’re #foreveralone: shut up, get real, and get going.

1. Shut up.
The more you say something, the more true you think it is. Like if you told yourself that you were awesome every single morning, you would actually feel significantly more confident (try it!). Also, whenever you make a comment about being forever alone, your friends either disagree with you (in which case you think they’re lying) or they speak up about how they’re also forever alone (which is kind of awkward). It’s a lose-lose situation.

2. Get real.
You’re in college. College. Bro. You’re like twenty. Just because you’ve been single up until now, or are currently single, doesn’t mean that you’re going to be single for the rest of your life. That’s how it goes – things change throughout our lives. If they didn’t, we’d all still be in diapers. And that would just suck.

3. Get going.
Surround yourself and fill up your life with things that make you feel happy, confident, and proud. Don’t bring yourself down. Just be awesome. The more you love yourself, the more other people love you. I’m not sure why this is, but it tends to work.

I’m not bitter, I don’t hate my friends when they say that they’re #foreveralone, and I genuinely do feel that way myself sometimes too. I’m writing this post because I know a lot of fantastic people who feel down about themselves because they’re single, when I know that they’ll probably get married long before I do. Are you one of them?

How are you going to change it?
